Local Peel Region Artists Present Mars, Venus and the Landscape
BRAMPTON, ON. (March. 6, 2013) – Do men and
women perceive and paint the landscape in distinctly different ways? Join the Peel Art
Gallery, Museum and
Archives (PAMA) as they explore these concepts with Mars, Venus and the
Landscape from March 10 to May 19. This exhibition brings together
landscape paintings, including familiar Caledon
scenery, by four artists in order to examine if it is possible to read gender
into a work of art. Artists will also be in attendance at the opening reception
on March 10 from 2 – 4 p.m.
“Each of these four artists works within the realist
tradition and derives inspiration from their immediate environment,” said Judy
Daley, Supervisor/Curator Art Gallery and Education Services, PAMA. “It will be
interesting to see whether or not our visitors feel that gender is evident in
these paintings.”
Brampton-based artist Lynne Schumacher paints woodland
landscapes of trails in Caledon and the Hockley Valley, while artist and former
Brampton resident Kate Taylor finds subject matter in the rolling fields
surrounding her farm near Erin, Ontario. Toronto-based William Lazos investigates
the urban landscape in dynamic and colourful paintings of the Canadian National
Exhibition. Inspired by the landscape around his Hanna, Alberta home, Greg Pyra, depicts scenes in
which the human presence is seen in isolated farms, a row of telephone poles or
distant fence lines.

If you are interested in photography as art and hobby, the Brampton Photo
Group invites you to join them at PAMA. Mars, Venus and the Landscape
will be the focus of a discussion on point-of-view and self expression. A talk
by exhibition curator Judy Daley will be followed by an outing and critique
with the group on subsequent days. With fellow photo enthusiasts you will use
your camera to interpret both built and natural surroundings. A Flickr photo
stream of the best photos from the outing, chosen in the critique, will be

Curator Judy Daley and Bollywood Boulevard’s Veronica Chail
kick-off the program with lively discussion that introduces the exhibition
premise. Participants form small teams to speculate and then present their
guesses as to which painting reflects a male or female mindset. After the
discussions, participants can mix and mingle while enjoying drinks and light
