THE CITY OF BRAMPTON CONCERT BAND INVITES YOU TO
“Heroes and Villains”
with guests: Susan Zach, Julia Pulo, James Faulkner, William Snodgrass and the choirs of Fallingbrook and Tomken Road Middle Schools
The City of Brampton Concert Band under the musical direction of Darryl Eaton will bring to close our 2011/2012 Rose Theatre Concert Series in spectacular fashion. We are excited to invite you to an evening where thoughtful moments balance with uplifting entertainment as we present “Heroes and Villains” at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday February 25, 2012 at the Rose Theatre.
The concert will focus on the theme in its broad sense in its many manifestations in life, history, nature, literature and art. To do this we have brought together a fantastic range of guest artists that will help us explore the concept in music.
To start the show, we are extremely pleased to present William Snodgrass as a solo percussion feature in the selection “Flight of the Bumblebee” as we look in a whimsical manner at how the theme is expressed in nature. He will also team up with the rest of our percussion section in a new selection for our band that features their considerable talents.
Violinist Susan Zach is a first-time guest with us and will be featured in the piece “Schindler’s List”. The musical qualities of the violin and as expressed by Sue will bring a deeply compelling element to this selection. You will also see her throughout the evening as she lends a unique quality to our music with an instrument not typically associated with concert band.
We are also very honoured to have Julia Pulo, David Bloom-award-wining vocalist for her recent performances with Brampton Music Theatre, as a guest. We have specially arranged a version of “I Believe”, the uplifting theme to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics as a feature solo for her.
The concert will feature several new arrangements prepared especially for band. These will highlight the talents of local guitarist James Faulkner who we welcome as both a guest instrumentalist and vocal soloist. He will be a highlight in our final sequence where we look at how ordinary people can be heroes in their own way.
The concert band will also perform “Fanfare For The Common Man” as a tribute to one of our own “everyday heroes” as we remember the passing of Fred Bacon earlier this fall. Fred had a long and involved history with the Concert Band including a long stint as the president. We felt it fitting to spend a moment to commemorate his dedication to our organisation.
The moving finale will also include the massed choirs of Fallingbrook and Tomken Road Middle Schools as we underscore the potential in all of us, and especially that of youth. The choirs will perform several numbers with the band and join “I Believe” with Julia Pulo. You will also hear Take Two a choral group from the Tomken Road Middle School featured in a solo selection.
From its contemplative start through to its inspiring finish, “Heroes and Villains” will combine the music of the multiple award-winning Concert Band with those of our feature guests and is a show not to be not be missed. We hope to see you there.
Tickets may be purchased at the Rose Theatre or Lester B. Pearson box offices or by calling 905 874-2800 or www.myrosetheatre.ca. Free parking is available below the Rose Theatre at the intersection of Theatre Lane and Union Street. Ticket prices are Adults $25, Seniors and Students $20 and Children 12 and under $15. For more information on our organization and other upcoming concerts and events please visit our website, www.bramptonconcertband.com or follow us on our Facebook fanpage: “Brampton Concert Band.”
OUR GUEST ARTISTS:
William Snodgrass
WILLIAM SNODGRASS completed his Bachelor of Music degree in percussion and Bachelor of Education degree both at the University of Toronto. His diverse interests in percussion have led him to perform with orchestras, wind bands, jazz ensembles and chamber groups. Will is also involved with recording and music production in his own home studio, and plays jazz piano in a jazz quartet. He is also the Artistic Director of the Boomwhacker Orchestra (http://www.bworchestra.ca/). The future may find him playing a really big triangle on the streets of Brazil, but currently, he teaches music for the Toronto District School Board.
Susan Zach
SUE ZACH started to play violin at the age of 7 and the viola at 14. She earned her Bachelor of music degree in viola performance at Wilfrid Laurier University and obtained her Bachelor of Education from l'universite Laurentienne. Susan has performed with many professional ensembles including Kitchener Opera Company, Kitchener Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, Sudbury Symphony and Niagara Symphony. Susan performs regularly in the community including Brampton Music Theatre, Georgetown Music Theatre and Theatre Aquarius Performing Artists Program. Susan teaches French and music in for the Waterloo Region District School Board in the secondary panel. She would like to thank the Brampton Concert Band for the opportunity to perform such a historic piece of music in the wonderful Rose Theatre of Brampton.
Julia Pullo
JULIA PULO makes her third appearance on the Rose Theatre stage. She has previously performed in two BMT productions at this venue. She performed as Brigitta in ˜The Sound of Music” and as little orphan Annie in “Annie”. For her role in Annie, she received Brampton’s honourable BRAVO award called The David Bloom Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Juvenile. She has performed in vocal competitions such as Burlington’s and Peel’s Music Festivals and has been awarded “The Most Promising Young Performer Runner Up Scholarship” (2010) and The Star Award for being the Top Performer in Musical Theatre (Junior category – 2011). She has just completed her Grade 3 Royal Conservatory Vocal exam this past January. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, acting, dancing and being with family and friends as much as possible!
James Faulkner
JAMES FAULKNER has a Bachelor of Music from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master of Science from Daemen College. James is currently a music teacher in the Peel District School Board. James has played with various ensembles throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In 2006 he was picked up by the Stingray Showband, where he went on tour and played music on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. After returning to land in 2007, James continued to play in various cover bands and tribute bands. Feeling the urge to express himself through the creation of music, James worked on forging his sound by taking aspects of his classical guitar influences and mixing them in with the modern sounds of pop and contemporary music. This past year, James has played at various venues throughout the GTA (including a show at the legendary Massey Hall), while building up a fan base in anticipation of releasing of his first album, The Facts Of Life. For as long as he can remember, music has always been an integral part of James' life.
